WASi - Wild Atlantic Seaweed Ireland

Who Are They?

Two seaweed enthusiasts dedicated to harvesting and using one of our most abundant and nutrient rich resources, in the most innovative and sustainable ways.

Clarie O’Sullivan is a former architect who has left her office to become a full-time beachcomber, alongside her partner, Eli Tanner, who has spent much of his life on the ocean and also the captain of the ferry to nearby Whiddy Island.

Side by side they make all the WASi products, hand harvesting, mixing, bottling and blending. Based in gorgeous Bantry Bay in West Cork, they want to put seaweed back on kitchen tables everywhere for all to enjoy.

What are they best known for?

Claire says; “Our classic garlic and lemon seaweed pesto is undoubtedly our best seller. It combines the wonderful umami flavour of Forest Kelp and it’s delicious with cheese, on bread or you can smother it over fish and bake in the oven”.

How Do They Do It?

“We watch the moon’s tides and follow her lead. Some days that means we’re up long before anyone in their right mind should be, but we do get to see the most beautiful sunrises. We work with the seasons, so at certain times of the year some of our pestos are unavailable.”

Have They Been Successful?

“ We’ve always measured success in terms of happiness,” says Claire.

“Now everyday is a new adventure, an exciting chapter. In less than a year our products have gained a devoted following in Cork with enquiries from all over the world. Now that they are being distributed all over the country our sights are set on the UK, Europe and further afield”.

What Is Their Philosophy?

‘To bring the healing and nourishing gifts of the ocean to your table in a manner that touches the earth lightly’.

What Does The Future Hold?

Lots of adventures in the world of seaweed with new products, new flavours and new markets.
