Franciscan Well Celebrates its 20th Easter Beer Festival
The Franciscan Well is set is host up to 20 Irish craft brewers at its 20th annual Easter Beer Festival in Cork this coming April 19thth to 21st.
The Well’s award-winning Bavarian style beer tent will house the country’s most innovative brewers including YellowBelly, Black Donkey, Hope brewing & 9 White Dear with a combined total of 20 Irish breweries and 60 rotational taps.
The festival has been running since they opened their doors in 1998, making it Ireland’s longest running beer festival. ‘Back when the general public’s view was we were brewing in pots and pans a pioneering group of Mavericks like ourselves tried to change the mindset .Many fell by the waste side but some carried on regardless mainly because we had nowhere else to go and formed what is now known as modern day “craft” .Settlers followed the pioneers which has brought us from 11 breweries in the late 90s to over 75 today’ Says Shane Long, founder of the Franciscan Well.
This year their will be a mixer of breweries that first attended the festival 20 years ago for example Hildean Brewery and first timers, like Larkins Brewing Co. ‘As we are celebrating our 20th year running the festival we thought it would be great to show case the longevity of some of the Irish brewers and also highlight some of the new breweries to the Irish brewing scene.’ Says Kate Clancy, Marketing Manager of the Franciscan Well Brewpub.
Festival goers are also asked to keep a special eye out for at least one ‘first time’ pour from each brewery. ‘ We know that people are always looking out for new beers to try so having an added addition of once off beers to the festival is an extra bonus especially for the Cork beer scene & community’ continues Kate.
The Franciscan Well based, on the site of an old Franciscan monastery is known for it’s innovation in the drinks industry. Since opening it has won numerous beer awards especially for their Chieftain IPA and Rebel Red, opened a purpose-built brewery & has had a successful collaboration with Jameson. The brewpub itself has also won awards such as Best Outdoor Space and Best Tourist Bar in Ireland 2018. It’s unique atmosphere is derived from a mix of historical setting, the enthusiasm of the staff & the diverse crowd – made up of devoted patrons & craft beer lovers mingling with tourists, students & local professionals from Cork’s many international companies.
